What happened today: 12 December in Malaysia
December 12th 2007 04:09
In year 2006, Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, 35 then, was the youngest person in the country to hold the post of the new Perlis mufti.
Like a cool wind blowing across a hot desert, he has boldly pointed out that the counsel and opinions of ulama (Islamic scholars) are not authoritative and definitive, but can be questioned.
Both are major accomplishments. In Islamic philosophy this door for discussion is known as ijtihad. It may surprise some to know that ijtihad has been closed for debate and discourse since the 11th or 12th century.
By prising open the doors, sceptical Muslims and even non-Muslims can have direct dialogue and debate on any Islamic principles and tenets, of which they are many facing Malaysians today. This opening for discourse might be a hundred decades too late, but perhaps it’s better than never. Despite its timeliness, this opening is a very contentious act and bound to be challenged by the protectors of the status quo, especially the ulama themselves.

It's good to see you too. I must admit that I haven't been able to keep my schedule up ever since I moved to the new place and now with a handful of things to handle, I only hope that I can get my schedules back on track with my health tuned up and get on the writing track again.
Things are going to be rough at my end for the next few months and I am truly thankful that you are still here, and thank you so much for supporting me all this while.
Hugs!
Have a blessed day
