World No Tobacco Day
May 31st 2007 03:31
Today marks the World No Tobacco Day
This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a "a world no-smoking day." In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

Learning Something Everyday
Malaysia Found
This day existed since 1989, and there have been many countries who are doing more encouragement to the public to put down the cigarette.
When I was in Australia, I remembered there were so many advertisments about no smoking and even not to smoke in front of the kids, but to kick this old habit off will take more than just a mere of few years.
Malaysia at this point of time is increasing its tax on tobacco and having a lot of road shows to teach the public more about tobacco and how bad cigarette can cause your lungs. It has started since 1994 and every year, there will be a lot of excibitions on this matter.
This morning there are already radio DJs announcing this day and encourage parents to bring their children to see such exibitions, since it is the school holidays in Malaysia at the moment.
Therefore I am sure, that days to come, there will be more prominent movement towards this day and we just need to hope for the best that our future will have a less smoky environment.
Thank you so much for dropping by, your comments are priceless to me. ^_^
Have a blessed day
